To commemorate the 40th anniversary of G-SHOCK last year, the brand released a collaboration with Sadanobu Gassan, one of the most talented swordsmiths in Japan. This limited-edition watch incorporated a range of high-tech features presented on a hybrid titanium watch, showcasing the Gassan family’s signature ayasugi-hada pattern aesthetic of Japanese sword-making. This year, G-SHOCK has revealed the MRG-B2000SG-1A—a tribute to Samurai warriors. A limited edition of 700 pieces, this watch honors the Shougeki-Maru: Gai kabuto helmet with an engraving of the tiger design on the watch’s bezel. Hand-engraved by master metalsmith Kobayashi Masao, the tiger stripes are expressed in a unique rock-grain relief pattern, symbolic of a Samurai warrior’s strength. The watch’s titanium case is ion-plated in a dark silver color and finished with a deep-layer hardening process to bring out the crystalline pattern and add to its robustness. There’s a metal plate on the side of the case commemorating G-SHOCK’s 40th anniversary and the screw heads are set with rubies to honor the special milestone for the collection.
The MRG-B2000SG-1A is modeled after the Shougeki-Maru: Gai kabuto helmet, which was specially created for MR-G.
“a tribute to Samurai warriors and traditional engraving techniques from Japan”
The titanium case undergoes a recrystallization process that gives it a unique texture and rugged look, and a deep-layer hardening process and dark silver arc ion plating are also applied. The bezel is hand-engraved by master metalsmith Masao Kobayashi with a tiger figure and rock-grain relief inspired by the maedate crest of the helmet. The white Durasoft fluoro-rubber band is unusual for an MR-G model and represents the ito odoshi of the helmet, which are the overlaying plates of armor bounded together with white string. Other unique elements are the four front screw heads set with rubies, which are lab grown by Kyocera. A 40th Anniversary plate is affixed to the left side of the case.
The features shock resistance, 200-meter water resistance, Tough Solar power, Multi-Band 6 auto radio timekeeping, Bluetooth smartphone link, dual time, stopwatch, timer, and LED light. The MRG-B2000SG-1A measures 54.7 x 49.8 x 16.9 millimeters and weighs 138 grams. As an MR-G model, the watch is made at the Premium Production Line at the Yamagata Casio factory in Japan.
