Incognito Mode, sometimes referred to as Private Browsing, is a way to open your browser without your browsing history, most cached items, or most cookies. You can think of it almost like opening your browser for the very first time.
LocalArt may ask you to use an incognito window as an essential troubleshooting step. Below are the instructions on how to open an incognito window on your preferred browser:
Chrome
- In the top-right corner of a Chrome window, click the Chrome menu icon. It will look like three vertical dots. (If you do not have these dots, you most likely need to update your browser to the newest version)
- Select New Incognito Window.
- A new grey window will open. This is your incognito window.
- Close the window when you are done to leave incognito mode.
- You can use “Ctrl + Shift + N” on Windows and Chrome OS or “⌘ + Shift + N” on a Mac to open an incognito window as well.

- Select New Private Window.
- A new window with a purple mask will open. This is your incognito window.
- Close the window when you are done to leave incognito mode.

Internet Explorer
Note: Artsy does not recommend using Internet Explorer. Per Microsoft’s documentation, this browser is no longer supported. Out-of-date browsers can cause issues.
- From an Internet Explorer window, click the Settings menu icon.
- Choose Safety.
- Choose InPrivate Browsing.
- A new window will open with an InPrivate icon to the left of the address bar. This is your incognito window.
- Close the window when you are done to leave incognito mode.
